Bird’s Nest Ferns (Asplenium nidus) are known for their elegant, arching fronds and tropical appearance. In terms of growth rate, they are generally considered slow to moderate growers, depending on their environment.
Under optimal indoor conditions—warm temperatures, high humidity, and bright, indirect light—you may notice new fronds unfurling every few weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall). However, they typically take several years to reach their full size, which can be up to 2 to 3 feet in width indoors.
Cooler temperatures, dry air, and low light can all slow down growth. While not fast growers, Bird’s Nest Ferns are relatively low-maintenance and long-living, making them a worthwhile investment for indoor greenery.
Water your Bird’s Nest Fern when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy, and avoid pouring water directly into the center of the rosette.
Bird’s Nest Ferns thrive in bright, indirect light, similar to the dappled sunlight they receive in their native tropical forests. An ideal location would be near an east- or north-facing window, or a few feet away from a bright south- or west-facing window with filtered light.
Too much direct sunlight can scorch the fronds, causing them to become yellow or brown and crispy. If your fern is exposed to intense light, consider using a sheer curtain or moving it slightly back from the window.
While Bird’s Nest Ferns can tolerate lower light levels, their growth may slow down and the fronds may appear less vibrant or smaller over time. In dimmer rooms, supplementing with a grow light can help maintain healthy foliage.
